Societal interest in appearance has a long history,but has never been more prevalent than now. Messagesassociating physical attractiveness with success andhappiness are unremitting; researchers andcommentators consider that extensive, and for aproportion of the population, debilitating levels ofappearance concerns are considered normative. In thisarticle I will offer a brief history of appearance researchas a context for the current state of play in this area,explore reasons why the topic of appearance remainsperipheral at best for most health psychologists, andoffer arguments for why it should become more central
